Want to be immortalized???

I am currently entering the final phase of development for my RPG.  Right now I am collecting the last of the artwork, re-formatting pages, and adding short stories and other content (like new rules for multi-classing, etc.). It is definitely an exciting, yet hectic time.  Now there is one more thing that I really could use to bring the pages of Reclamation to life–QUOTES!!!!!!!!!!!

I am in need of quality quotes. They can be from contemporary/historical figures or they can be made up (for example, the quotation could come from a Magi elder or a Host Pillar).

Here is one that I am particularly fond of and will include in the chapter on resisting the debilitating rage of The Sickness:

“Battle not with monsters, lest you become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.”

The Dystopia is a dark and brooding place, and certainly quotes that echo that motif will be preferable, but that isn’t to say that messages of hope and even borderline comical quotes couldn’t be used as well. I just thought I’d throw out this idea out there to anyone who might be interested. If I use a quotation that you suggested, I’ll make sure to include your name in the official acknowledgments page of the book.

  1. The peasants form no part of the literate world on which most reconstructions of ancient history focus. They are almost lost to historical view, because of their illiteracy and localism. (Thomas F. Carney, The Shape of the Past) 1975

Certain persons, no doubt, get dragged into glory. Make me willing, sometimes even eager for the stretching journey…There to be known. (Owen Dowling)

I feel myself so much a part of everything living that I am not the least concerned with the beginning or ending of the concrete existence of any one person in this eternal flow. (Albert Einstein)

Perhaps ultimately, with the fulfillment of the creative process, finite personality will have served its purpose and become one with the eternal reality, but we do not at present need to know that final future. What we need to know is how to live now. This is the way of love, witnessed by the saints and mystics of all the great traditions. (John Hick)

Egotism, self-centerdness, and pride are the deadly enemies of understanding and truth. (NJoy)

  2. -A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new; when an age ends; and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance. (Jawaharlal Nehru)
-Build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn.(General Mac Aurthur)
-“I never learned how to tune a harp, or play upon a lute; but I know how to raise a small and obscure city to glory and greatness…whereto all kindreds of the earth will pilgrim.(The Greek Admiral Themistocles)
    – The great questions of the day will not be settled by means of speeches and majority decisions but by iron and blood.
    (Bismarck, Otto Von)
-I have witnessed the tremendous energy of the masses. On this foundation it is possible to accomplish any task whatsoever.(Mao Tse-Tung)
-The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.( Eleanor Roosevelt)

  3. “Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow. Don’t walk behind me; I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend.” -Albert Camus

(Not quite dark…but appropriate in a world full of equals)

  4. In order for evil to triumph, it is only necessary that good men do nothing. (Edmund Burke)

When the world is shattered, and the darkness is seething, and your candle gutters and flickers its last breaths-
When your blade is broken and your chamber is empty, and your food supplies are low and the sky is dimming fast-
When you’re exhausted, and breath comes ragged and shallow, and you can barely stagger from wounds and weariness-
You wield the greatest weapon that is left in these dark days.
    You still have Hope.
    (Player/ Wise old sage/Magi/etc.)

      • Huh. I actually hadn’t meant that as a specific reference to Serenity. Good point there.

Of course, your reply could be used by a Host cell embedded within Serenity with the goal of bringing it down to seize the supplies…

      • I think Keldon’s original quotation and NJoy’s response can both stand on their own… one with the Magi or whatever and the other as part of the Serenity description.

It would be cool I think to have a pithy quotation or motto for the other two major Houses of Serenity as well.

    • @architectgames-

That seems like a really good idea! I’ll hold off for a bit to give some other people the chance to toss in some ideas, then I’ll go both-barrels with some more quotations and some specifically designed for the major Houses.

  5. “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from an iron cross.”
    – President Dwight D. Eisenhower
