Building a Haven (PART 1)

Finally I have returned to my woefully neglected blog. Things have been absolutely crazy these past couple of weeks. Ever since my kickstarter project for Reclamation was successful, I have been constantly emailing artists, compiling new work, and piecing together all of the incentives that need to be shipped and delivered to the backers of my project… That might not be so challenging if I did not also have a full-time job that had nothing to do with this stuff. Oh well. wagh, wagh, wagh… right?

I promised my kickstarter backers that if we reached $8000 (which we surpassed by over 1K!) that I would add to the Reclamation guidebook a sample haven city based on the collective ideas of the gaming community. I wanted to delay this a little so that people would have a chance to look over the BETA version of the game that I sent out, because ideally, the choices that we make about this new haven would at least be somewhat inspired by the dystopian setting of the game.

So… everyone reading this can have input. I would love nothing more than to be overwhelmed by ideas and suggestions. However, I think it important to mention that Reclamation “backers” will hold a little more weight in the discussion since this is an addition to the game that was promised to them.

So here is how I plan to run this little forum (until I come up with a better idea). Over the next couple weeks I will continue to post questions that I need answered in order to write this new haven into the game. I would like for people to respond to this post with their answers to the questions. I will then cherry-pick the most creative and exciting answers and then move on to the next set of questions. I certainly hope people take part in this process… if the blog is silent… well… I guess I’ll just end up making the setting myself… and it will end up being Narnia or something ridiculous. And don’t think that I don’t have the cojones to do it either. My game can also have talking god-lions. Don’t test me people. Don’t… test… me.  ;)

Okay… so… haven-city questions. Let’s start with the most basic, and yet most important, things:

  1. What is the name of this haven? 
    Bonus points for determining who named it and why. What kind of history is behind this name?
  2. Where is this haven city located?
    Not just the country/continent, but a very specific location would be great. The more detail the better. The location will be critical to a number of upcoming questions that will need to be answered about this haven like what challenges survivors face here, how dangerous is the region, etc.
  3. How many people inhabit this haven? 100? 1000? 10,000? 100,000? I guess there could be more… but it’s unlikely.
    The more people in the haven, the more room there is for technological and even social advancement. However, more people equals more food issues, and considering that each person is a potential Sickness liability, larger havens can even be more dangerous than smaller ones. Basically, are we looking at a haven that is more of a gated community, or some sprawling bastion of humanity at the new center of the world?

    • Who named it?: One of the 100 inhabitants, an old man with his arms permanently crossed (they were all radioactive-y and got stuck) and his face in an terrible scowl decided that he didn’t like the place because it wasn’t like the old world (a world in which he had buildings and days named after him), said “this is worse than a death penalty.” His wife misheard him and thought he said “serenity.” The rest is history.

  1. What is the name of this haven?
    The Spire. It got its name from the jagged shape of the city’s walls rising above the marshy wasteland. (The city’s inhabitants didn’t come up with it, but instead merely adopted the name from all of the wastelanders who followed the impressive silhouette of the city in hopes of refuge.)

    Where is this haven city located?
    The partially flooded (possibly radioactive) remains of New Orleans. In the nuclear cataclysm many of the levies would have broken and the remaining dry portions of the city would have been walled off to keep the flood waters and mortis creatures at bay.

    How many people inhabit this haven? 100? 1000? 10,000? 100,000? I guess there could be more… but it’s unlikely.
    1000 – 2000. They have managed to survive by maintaining strict quarantine laws by using the city’s massive exterior walls and a well stocked armory.

  2. Good stuff so far! I’ll leave this open for the rest of the evening. Tomorrow morning I will proceed with the next couple of questions. So if you want to add your input to this opening salvo of stuff… speak now or forever hold the peace of this blossoming haven!

  3. Name of the Haven:
    The Citadel
    Who named it:
    The commanding officer of the Citadel in the opening days of the Sickness, Lt. Col. Stryker.
    Why is it called the Citadel?
    An old fortified compound located within the Appalachian mountains, The Citadel is an apropos name for the old main bunker complex, surrounded by now-fortified barbed wire fences, barricades and watchtowers.

    Where is it located?
    The Appalachian mountains, possibly in either Maine, Vermont, or New Hampshire. Dense hardwood forest, mostly deciduous, presenting plenty of lumber and game, but also the challenges associated with a rural environment, specifically a lack of areas for resupply and scavenging.

    The population of this Haven would likely be relatively small, ranging from 1bout 150 to 200 at the maximum, and would require additional living spaces/barracks to have been constructed from timber.

  4. Serenity wasn’t “named” it evolved because of all the work the few did to build it. It was a natural process, organic, if you will.
